How to volunteer in maui fires?

Maui is working to rebuild and recover after several devastating wildfires swept across the island in July and August 2023. Over 41,000 acres were burned and thousands were displaced from their homes. While the fires are now contained, there is still much work to be done to help Maui heal.

Maui Wildfire

If you’re visiting or living on Maui and looking for ways to give back during this difficult time, there are many volunteer opportunities available.

Here are some options:

Maui Humane Society The Maui Humane Society cares for lost and displaced pets impacted by the fires. Volunteers are needed for a variety of roles like dog walking, socialization, grooming, facility cleaning and more. No prior experience required. To sign up, visit their website at MauiHumaneSociety.org, email volunteer@mauihumanesociety.org or stop by between 9am-4pm.

Maui County The County of Maui has set up volunteer operations to help sort donations, pack food boxes, wash fruit, and assist families recovering from the fires. Opportunities are posted regularly at mauinuistrong.info as needs arise.

Hands On Maui

This volunteer organization posts updates on urgent needs for the fire relief effort like debris clean-up days and food bank help. Sign up on their website at handsonmaui.galaxydigital.com to receive email notifications when new opportunities are available.

Hawaiian Red Cross The Red Cross is providing emergency shelter, meals and mental health services to those impacted. Volunteers are critical to help deliver these services. Apply online at redcross.org/volunteer or call 1-800-621-3362.

Grassroots Community Groups Maui is also home to many grassroots groups organizing aid and volunteer events on the ground. Follow social media groups like Share Your Mana Maui and 808 Cleanups for announcements. Activities range from preparing meals to clearing properties.

Every little bit helps Maui get back on its feet. Mahalo for supporting this resilient community during such a difficult time. Together we can make a difference.
